The process is ocnsidered to be long and arduous. Frequently there are several family member who must first agree, which may take months. Then typically the court must also agree.
On the other hand, a friend of mine found a strip mall, called the court, and closed in a few days. Nothing is cast in stone.

Can anyone tell me if it is worthwhile trying to purchase homes that are in probate, what is the process, and how long is the process?

The process is very state specific. Do the research for your state.
