If you have a lot that is perfectly regular, then a lot size of 40 x 100 would give you 4,000 sq.ft. (Of course that’s 40 feet wide across the front and 100 feet deep).

A lot size of 20 x 200 would also give you a 4,000 sq.ft. lot.

Also, an irregular (not square) lot could add up to a total of 4,000 sq.ft. and the frontage versus the depth can vary drastically front front to back and side to side depending on which way it was ‘cut’.

Just ask the dimensions (width, length) and if it’s regular or irregular to get a better idea.

I’m looking into buying a vacant lot to build on from scratch. Before I make any phone calls, could anyone tell me what types of questions to ask the seller so I don’t appear completely ignorant. I’m assuming the price could be negotiated as it is with buildings. Also, how do I convert 4000 sq. ft into lot size?

Thanks
