Clayton Homes Agrees to Buy Karsten Homes

Clayton Homes, a unit of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., said late Monday that it agreed to purchase manufactured home builder Karsten Homes.
Financial terms weren’t disclosed. The company will be integrated into CMH Manufacturing Inc., the manufacturing group of Clayton Homes. The acquisition is expected to be completed within the next 60 days.
Founded in 1995, Karsten Homes operates 4 manufacturing facilities in Sacramento, Calif., Albuquerque, New Mexico, Stayton, Oregon, and Breckenridge, Texas. Karsten builds more than 1,700 HUD and modular coded homes annually, and employs 700 workers.
Karsten distributes their homes through a network of 154 independent housing retailers, in more than 14 states. The company said Harry Karsten and his management team will remain in their present roles.
Rick Strachan, president of CMH Manufacturing, stated, “The four Karsten production facilities dovetail nicely with our other facilities in the west, complementing the existing product line, allowing us to increasingly satisfy customer demand.”

Haven’t heard they bought Fleetwood, but did see a thing in the paper last week that Clayton purchased Karsten Homes, a manufacturer with several plants in the west.
Of course, with Warren Buffet’s checkbook to play with CMH may well corner the whole industry.

Did Karsten Sacramento manufacture and sell mobile homes in 1999 that were shoddily built - improper skylights, improperly installed?
