Direct Mail Postcards, worth the cost? - Posted by JNP

Posted by JNP on June 23, 2005 at 21:07:29:

Anyone had success using postcards to target a certain neighborhood or zip code. I want to find the deals before they get in the paper or MLS. Anyone used the same strategy? Like it or Hate it?

Thanks in advance!

I think the are one of the most cost effective ways to do business! If you have a good targeted mailing list, you can get the post office to Supply, print and put postage, on postcards with YOUR message for 1 cent more than regular postage for a postcard, which is .24 cents. Thee are ways to do it less, richard roop claims, for something like .13 cents each.

Phil,
Do you think it is best to target whole neighborhoods, or specific homes that are run down, or in preforeclosure. I was thinking about hitting a whole neighborhood of areound 2000 people at a time for a few months.

Phil,

Please send me the website for this if you could.
I tried the usps.com and they use NetPost now. They charge 69 cents p/card plus postage! Where is the service that you speak of?

Thank you for your time,

Wm-Pa

I would stay away from having the post office do all your cards. They dont have a good responce. You should go with bright cards. I have used www.investorprinting.com a few times for my postcards.

Phil & John,

I went to usps.com and went to the direct mail page. I signed in and the page was automatically directed to NetPost.com which is now the direct mail partner for the United Postal Service. I called USPS and spoketo customer service and was told the same thing. I mentioned the 24 cents per card and was told that this was not a service offered.

Can either of you give me the link to the webpage that says I can get these cards mailed for 24 cents?

What am I doing wrong???

Thank You,

Wm-Pa

You must be looking at the wrong stuff on www.Usps.com. They charge .24 per post card, that includes printing YOUR message, the printing, the postcard its self and postage all for .24 each. The direct mail guy is at www.richardroop.com.

Are you saying the po is now charging 69 cents. Or am I misunderstanding you. They are $.24 per card on the usps website.

Phil,
This is why I asked you if you had the correct web address. Have you actually used the USPS.com web site and ordered post cards for 24 cents or are you going by what “The direct mail guy said at www.richardroop.com”, who ever that is…

Once again, if you HAVE actually ordered and sent out post cards using USPS.com please correct me and let me know what the correct web address is.

Thank You,

Wm-Pa

Below I’ve pasted 6 receipts from a mail run I did in Feb and March of '04. In every case, the cost was just a hair over 25¢ each. Note that the price was for spot color (red), which costs extra. That said, I went onto the USPS cost estimator (http://mailingonline.postedigital.com/cost_calc.asp), and posted the results below the receipts.

I went onto the USPS cost estimator (http://mailingonline.postedigital.com/cost_calc.asp), and entered the specifications:
Postcard - One-Sided
Postcard Stock
100
Spot Color - Red
First Class

The following resutlts were produced:

Production Costs
$0.123 x 100 = $12.31

Postage Costs
$0.194 x 100 = $19.40

Total Price $31.71

Evidently the price went up ($0.3171 each), but you still won’t have to sell your car to send out a mailing.

If you change the color to Black & White:

Postcard - One-Sided
Postcard Stock
100
Black & White
First Class

The following resutlts were produced:

Production Costs
$0.0082 x 100 = $8.17
Postage Costs
$0.194 x 100 = $19.40

Total Price $27.57

$0.2757 each. Sorry, that’s rock bottom. Couldn’t get it any lower.

Tom,

Thank you for the link. To clarify this, it is not through the United States Post Office, it is a partner company which is why simply entering the USPS.com will not take you to the correct sight. You might be able to get to link for the 24 cent cards sight by entering USPS.com (although I coudln’t find it) but as some other people were telling me to go to USPS.com that was only half the story.

Again thanks.
