Do LLCs need lawyer representation ? - Posted by Kathleen Cory(NY)

You need to check your local court rules to determine whether an LLC can be represented by an manager or member in court.

Frankly, I don’t think investors should represent themselves in landlord/tenant court. You can usually find a local atty that does nothing but evictions who will charge you a very reasonable fee to do it. in my state, it’s about $125. It would be worth it for 5x that amt, since spending a half day in court is a waste of my valuable time. I would rather spend my time making money than evicting tenants.

I read that in most states, corporations need to be represented by a lawyer when in a court situation. Is an LLC considered a true corporation and would it be required to use legal representation??

I represent myself in all evictions and judgment procedures. It would be a real draw back to have to hire a lawyer for each presentation to the court.

Has anyone heard of this? I am very close to forming an LLC for my company, but this is a concern.
