Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to clarify my understanding regarding EIN for S Corps. If I’m electing the S Corp, I can use my SSN# as my EIN#, correct? As the S is deemed a “pass through” entity for tax purposes?

Thanks,
Bob

As a separate legal & taxable entity, you MUST receive an ID # for the S Corporation!

EINs are free and you can get one assigned to you over the phone, by fax, or mail. You will most likely need one to open any bank accounts in your business name. The IRS instructions also suggest that “pass-through” entities apply for an EIN.

The instructions for filling out the SS-4 form can be found here and can answer a lot of questions your have about EINs:

The SS-4 form is used to apply for a EIN.
