If you have leased the home and no longer reside in the home, then it cannot be your homestead. You can only claim one homestead at a time, your personal residence.
You may open yourself up to possible felony charges if discovered otherwise. I would strongly consider those consequences as oppose to the increased taxes you might incur.
I hate paying any more taxes than my “fair share” just like the most people.

If you were residing on the property on January 1, then you can claim a homestead exemption for that particular tax year. This is true even if you moved out on January 2.
