Hey Nate…could you e-mail me directly - I’d like to find out more about your ac installation. I recently had an estimate from a trusted contractor but your deal sounds much better.

Gut Rehab - HVAC - Posted by JJ OMalley

I am doing a gut-rehab on half of a duplex that I am moving in to. My half is 2400SF on three evenly spaced levels. I am going to be installing a new HVAC system. The contractors that have come scoped the project are knowledgeable, but I still need to educate myself. I am estimating the HVAC to costs about 20K.

Could someone point me to some good websites that breakdown HVAC in laymen terms? I am talking about boiler, burners, ductwork, coils, hydro systems, condensers, gas vs. oil, humidfiers, dry air, ventillation, chimney linings, etc.

I am trying to get a better understanding of what I really need verse what people want to sell/install.

Any websites, articles, and/or whitepapers would be great.

Thanks in advance.

JJ,
i have done similar research before. This one site has a lot of good info. Maybe not exactly what you want, but I hope you can take some knowledge from it.

Here are some other links I just dug up. They are very broad and varied.

20k for hvac on a gut rehab seems quite expensive.

i have rehabbed several houses normally 2k sqft or less and have added a complete hvac system to several and the cost was nowhere near the 20k that you mention.

shop around!

I agree, I am currently rehabbing a 2 unit and am installing all new central heat and air (2 systems - one in each unit) and all new duct work for $9600. And that is in Washington DC which is a high cost market. I think you need to get more bids.
