From my experience, the more you know the faster you build on it. However, very basic concepts of notes as an entity, and some basic RE knowledge is a plenty.
the material is not “light reading” but is very thorough and step by step.

How much bout notes do lyou have to know before taking John Behle’s course Trilogy? In his description of the course he says some knowledge of notes is assumed.

The “Trilogy” books or books and audios start at a little higher level than the video course. The video course starts at the basics of what a note is and goes on to some very advanced subjects. This is possible because there are 28 hours of videos and many hundreds of pages of text.
