Check at the county court house. The estate will have to be probated. Also you’ll find if there are any heirs that may inherit the property. You’re allowed to read the file.

I am in a unique situation. On monday our next door neighbor died. She has never married, no brothers or sisters. She has lived in the house all her life and we have never seen anyone stopping over. She did tell us that her house had been paid off “years ago”

My question is this, i want to know the steps to take in trying to buy the house. It is in good shape, just needs a lot of updating, and yard maintenance.
Could someone explain who I should try and contact about the house?
Thanks
Lauren

Lauren, If there are truly no heirs, and no mortgages or leins; then the funeral director may well end up being the one who sues the estate for his fee. The result would be a lein on the property. He could end up being the owner. It might pay to ask the funeral director if there are any heirs that you can contact. If nobody persues this issue the state will end up with the property…ED
