John.

I am not aware of any site, although I’m sure there is one where you can do nationwide title searches to some degree. However I would think that the best place to be able to do this would be at you County Courthouse. Take a trip there or give them a call and ask if they have recorded information available on the web. Some counties have a great deal of information available to the public via the web and others are just not up to speed as of yet. Given some time I think all counties will have this available.

I hope this is of some help to you. Best of success to you John!

P.S. Checking on the status of a title either through the County Recorders Office or the internet should never be relied on 100% (Just use it to get a general picture). Always have your title company perform the search, and they will, if they are providing the title insurance. …and, whatever you do: PLEASE…

DON’T EVER BUY A HOUSE WITHOUT BUYING TITLE INSURANCE!!!

Both counties have their recordings online so searching the records is a snap. The real trick is understanding what the records are telling you. Unless you have a strong knowledge of real estate law and title examination guidelines I would only search the titles for information prior to dealing. Don’t close without a professional doing the title search and examination. And get title insurance.
