paint and tin ceilings - Posted by dell-ohio

We purchased an old hotel that we are rehabbing and turning into apartments and commercial space.

Question. The first floor is a wide open space of 2,500 square feet with tin ceilings in excellent condition except for the badly peeling paint. Any good remedies for removing the paint?

Had a sandblaster look at the job, $6,500 and no gaurentee that it would not cut holes into the tin.

Walnut hulls were reccomended. Checked price for materials $3,000 >.

We are going to have a kid with a wire brush start scrubbing tomorrow unless we find some better advise.

Thank You,

3000 psi pressure washer would most likely remove most of it. You could either rent one or hire a local painter to do it.

Walnut shells are pretty harsh too, but not as harsh as sand. Baking soda is used today to remove paint without harming the surface underneath but this is going to be costly too. Not to mention messy.

The easiest thing is to do what you are doing. Scrape off the loose paint and repaint with a spray gun.
