Technically:
Have him fill out a W-9 for your records.
Sign a Independant contractor form requiring he cover himself with Workers Comp Ins.
Don’t pay by the hour.
Realistically:
Give him $200.00 and deduct it as misc. contract labor.

I’m gonna pay a buddy of mine to help me out at a property. Is paying him deductible, even though he’s not on my payroll. He’s not an IC either. I’ll just give him $200 for helping me out this weekend. Should I have him write up a bill or something like that?

You can pay him up to $599 per year without any paperwork and expense it.
