It is ABSOLUTELY legal for foreigner to directly own RE in China. Better than the MF, it is a PURE play.
You controls what you invest, the timing out of the market, fully exposual to the currecy appreciation, a low correlation to the US and Asia stock market, and the most important, a guaranteed positive cash flow for 10 years. Comparing to the already peaked US RE market and the volatile stock market, it is worth a closer look as an investment choice to park the money.

To many, investment in China may seem like a difficult prospect. Apart from language and cultural differences, concerns may range from laws and regulations which may not be transparent, to complicated bureaucracy. However, China has made huge progress since it joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2001.

Embraced a market-oriented economy 20 years ago, China has the super growth rate in the past 10 years ((averaging approx 9.4% per year between 1978 and 2004). Known as the world’s manufacturial center and one of four “BRIC” countries (wellknown nickname from wall street to the four dominant emerging market countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China), China’s GDP has leap frogged Italy, France ,United Kingdom and become the fourth largest economy in the world, just behind US, Japan and Germany. We, as real estate investor, cannot ignore this country’s great opportunity and growth potentail.

a question. Is it legal for foreigners to own real estate in China? for that matter, can Chinese citizens own real estate there?

You can get plenty of exposure to Chinese economics while keeping your money at home. Plenty of mutual funds. I have not checked to see if there are MF’s specializing in Chinese real estate. If there are, drill into the details, and see what companies these MF’s invest in. That would be a way to own stocks in Chinese real estate and RE-relatd companies. or just buy the MF.

Plus, the Chinese have a huge appetite for commodities: oil, natural gas, copper, gold, aluminum, you name it. Easy to see where they get their materials.
