I just dealt with this situation on a tax sale property that I was sure would be grandfathered 60+ years old)
. Turns out I had to do a combination of sprinkler and firecode sheetrock in the basememt in the basement and put a fire escape on, since there wasn’t enough water pressure to do a sprinkler in the main stairway.
Basicly, you need to provide a non combustible path out on anything more than 2 family. This is the case in NY at least according to my building inspector.
Fire Escape bids ranged from $4800-$13K and sprinkler was $4500-11K.
