Where do you live? My handyman earns $10 an hour, and does a spectacular job. For $45 an hour I’m not surprised he went out of business. If your friend worked 40 hours per week, he made 7 times more in a month than my friend who works for $9 per hour in a doctors office.

This seems to be a great opportunity. I was thinking about starting my own handyman service when I happended to find your site. Seems like an excellent place to put my handy man energy

Make sure you price your work at a high enough rate that will allow to stay in business and make a profit. I have a buddy that started a handy man service. He priced his work at only $45 per hour. Of course he is no longer in business and back to working for someone else who bills him out at $85 pre hour. Get at least $85 per hour and you will be able to expand and stay in business.
