Creative ways around things are of course appreciated by yours truly AND the IRS. Personally, I prefer to be creative on technical issues where there’s lots of room to argue. Getting clever on profession is a good way to turn a simple random audit into a detailed rubber-glove grab your ankles kind of experience. Just my opinion.

So that means you just give your profession a different name. “Alaskan commercial fisherman” becomes a “boat worker.” An “independent used car dealer” becomes a “lemon salesman.” A “travel agent” becomes a “tourism engineer.”

My father is a lawyer at an insurance company. Sometimes he tells people his is an “attorney” and sometimes he tells people his is in “insurance.” They are both the truth.

So, basically, you mean everyone … (if you can’t trust ministers, who can you trust???

Except, of course, real estate investors!
