Does anyone have hands-on experience with obtaining tax lien certificates in the state of NH? If so, I would greatly appreciate information on the subject (e.g. what office to contact to find out what properties have tax liens, etc.)
Anything would be helpful.

In Massachusetts, us Yankees do things different…and no two towns are the same.
Some will take the property, and after a redemption period, sell them at auction.
Others will sell on a piecemeal basis notifying interested parties on a town list of the auction.
Lastly, some towns will be in competition with you, but for a different purpose. One town of which I am aware will take the property, hold open a redemption period for the owner to buy it back, and when the owner does not…
a. does the town want to keep it for its own use?
b. does the conservation department want it for open space?
If you get “NO” redemption, “NO” for use, and “NO” by the conservation department…THEN it will go to bid to both the maintained list and a public (read: newspaper) pronouncement.

Mike, I checked into this myself some time ago.
Apparently properties go right to tax sale, and that
only happens every few years for the town of Nashua.
Last time I was told there were 2 properties they sold
in 1994 for non-payment of taxes. The closest place I
found that has yearly scheduled tax lien auctions is
CT. I believe it is in the spring and I hope to go this
year and check it out.

Don’t know about NH but here in FL it is done through the county tax collector’s office.

John’s right. John Beck’s course list out the states that have tax certificates and one of them is not New Hampshire. I find it takes about 4 or 5 years for cities to take over properties for nonpayment of taxes and then they usually wait until they have a few properties to sell off at once.

Thanks, but I don’t believe that such a position exists in NH. (At least my searching so far has indicated this.) I’m beginning to get the feeling that this is handled by the towns…
