Sarah,

Damp rid is a good product. I keep them in the bathrooms when I rent a new place out.

A good way to help keep humidity levels down in moist areas.

I know there are 500+ messages on mold in the archives but I need a real simple answer and not “call the federal government, wear protective gear and evacuate the neighborhood!!”.

I’ve got a small amount of what appears to be black mold in a bathroom closet on the wall. I’ve heard chlorine bleach doesn’t really get rid of mold for various reasons.

Does anyone have any experience with some simple HomeDepot cleaning products I can buy to clean this up? There doesn’t appear to be any water source here at all. Probably just the humidity from the bathroom that caused this. Area is totally dry.

Thanks,
RL

Hi RL,

Bleach should do the trick.

RL-

Don’t knock the chlorine bleach. I work for indoor microbial specialists and what they always suggest for black mold commonly found in wet or humid areas is a 5 to 1 bleach solution. Just wipe it down and it should do the trick. If the drywall is damaged in the area, you should remove it beyond any traces of mold or water intrusion. Then examine the wood and insulation for mold. Remove insulation if it’s affected and wipe down the wood with the bleach solution. Then refinish with new materials. You may want to consider putting a door vent in to help with air circulation and you can buy a product called DampRid (at Home Depot it’s found in the paint section), and it helps absorb excess humidity. I hope this helps.
