one way is to search at the courthouse. Look for properties that have had the same owner for 20, 30, 40, or even 50 years. The longer they own the property the more likely that there is no mortgage.

I read somewhere that upto 35% of homes are
paid for and owned by retirees.
Is there a source for such info?
