ICSC Convention in May - Posted by Tom

Posted by Tom on February 25, 2006 at 13:25:55:

What is the focus of the ICSC convention in May? I’m both interested in educating myself about the shopping center industry as well as finding tenants for one of my strip malls.

Are there actually a lot of retailers who come?

Thanks

Tom,

The May event is the national convention, typically attended by 25,000-30,000 people. It is the biggest event of the year, and well-attended by retailers, developers, owners, brokers, lenders, suppliers and anyone else who has even a passing interest in shopping centers.

The program agenda is on the ICSC website at http://www.icsc.org/2006SC/conv_program.php

The retailers generally have appointments booked in advance of the convention, and some of the most popular will have a series of fifteen minute slots completely booked. The trade show spreads across bothe sides of the convention center, one being the leasing mall and the other for suppliers. There will be educational sessions run in concurrent format, spanning topics from finance to maintenance.

All in all it’s a great time, and so big that it overwhelms the senses. Tip: if you’re going be sure to do the advance registration. The onsite lines can be horrendous. There isn’t another event even close to it in industry-wide participation.

All that said, I’ve actually gotten more deals done in the smaller regional meetings. The list of meetings is at http://www.icsc.org/apps/meeting_list.php then click to sort by region. These have similar education programs, but the attendance is typically those with specific plans for expanding into that area. That narrows down the field and allows more time to talk real deal points rather than just a meet-and-greet atmosphere.

p.s. One last thought… this may be borderline heresy to publicize, but I’m not the only one who has noticed a marked shift in attendees in the past year and a half… many more owners and developers than retailers. There are a couple of reasons… one is the red-hot popularity of retail as a property type… more and more being built/proposed/bought/sold… and secondly, there are fewer retailers with major expansion plans. One guy was quoted in a trade journal saying, “It’s like being in a singles bar with five guys for every girl.” But even so, ICSC is the only game in town for retail networking, and you can bet your competition will be there.

Larry,

One membership, one badge. In the past I’ve registered additional people from the same company and got a reduced admission, but you’ll have to contact ICSC to get details on their current policy.

For registration details, agenda, etc. see http://www.icsc.org/2006SC/index.php
