I’d say a trade or business, but like rental income, exempt from SS tax.

Is the business of money lending an active business incurring self-employment tax, or is the interest income earned therein treated as other portfolio income (like buying a bond or discounted note) e.g. as investment income owing no self-employment tax? Assume I hold the notes in my portfolio until maturity or payoff, rather than flip for a yield spread premium.
