Surveyors…how to hire, any differences? - Posted by Philip

I am needing to divide some land.
Are surveyors all the same?

Any suggestions?

Philip,
When I divided my property I got a recommendation for a surveyor from my attorney. It worked out fine, but I wouldn’t rely on an attorney for this kind of information any more unless they have first-hand experience. Plenty of them pretend to know something about everything. After a few costly mistakes, I now know that it’s the good ones who will admit that they don’t have all the answers.

In the future, I’d check with the city or county planning department and see if I couldn’t get the names of a few surveyors who are well known and well-liked by the officials there. They probably aren’t allowed to make recommendations, so you’ll have to be crafty. The surveyor I hired was on a first-name basis with everyone involved in the process at the city and county level. I know this helped speed up the approval process.

Also, talk with local builders about who they use. They’re sure to have some opinions and advice.

Good luck. Dividing a property can be tricky.
